Veterinary assistant: which course of study to choose and what the job entails
You are considering a career as a veterinary assistant but unsure how to proceed? There are multiple educational paths, each suited to different life situations, whether you are a recent high school graduate, an adult changing careers, or someone who wants to start with practical experience immediately. Here is a guide on how to decide.
Is this work suitable for you?
Before you start your studies, it is worth considering a few prerequisites. The work of a veterinary assistant requires physical fitness (restraining animals, standing for long periods), calmness in stressful situations and resilience to unpleasant sights, blood, injuries and sometimes euthanasia are part of clinic operations. At the same time, you need patience when communicating with frightened or anxious animal owners. If this does not deter you, the field offers stable employment with a clear qualification path.
Three paths to education
A veterinary or agricultural business with a veterinary focus at a secondary agricultural and veterinary school, 4 years ending with a maturity certificate. The best choice if you already know your interest during primary school and want to complete your formal education as soon as possible.
Veterinary assistant profession (DiS. Title), typically 3 years. Suitable for secondary school graduates seeking deeper professional training and a stronger starting position in the job market, this qualification is usually the most sought-after by employers.
Shortened courses lasting 3-12 months, suitable for adults with related education (biology, agriculture) or those wishing to enter the field quickly. Some clinics additionally accept applicants without formal education as assistants and train them directly on the job.
A typical day at the office
The morning begins with preparing the surgery, sterilising instruments and checking stock of medicines and materials. Then the first patients arrive: weighing, temperature measurement, calming the animal and taking a brief history from the owner. During the morning, the assistant helps with examinations and any procedures, restraining the patient, handing over instruments, monitoring its condition under anaesthesia. The afternoon is usually for caring for hospitalised animals, basic laboratory work (microscopy, blood tests) and administration, maintaining records and communicating with clients. No two days are exactly the same, which for many assistants is the most interesting part of the job.
Where to gain your first experience during your studies
Whichever educational path you choose, practical experience during your studies will help more than any theory. Many veterinary clinics are happy to take on students for part-time work or short internships, just contact them directly, even if there is no formal vacancy advertised. Volunteering at an animal shelter is also a good addition, where you can try out basic animal care, behaviour and handling without the pressure of a clinic environment (more in the article Work and volunteering at the animal shelter). Students with practical experience from a part-time job or internship have a noticeably smoother start when entering employment after graduation.
Indicative price
The salary of a veterinary assistant depends mainly on experience, type of workplace and region, private clinics usually pay more than state administration or rescue stations, with Prague typically above the national average. As a rough guide, depending on region and employer, starting assistants earn around 28 000-32 000 Kč gross per month, while experienced assistants with several years of practice earn more. A detailed table by experience level and the full career path up to clinic management can be found in the article. Veterinary assistant: what to study and how much you earn.
What if you are not sure whether this is right for you?
Deciding to invest several years in studies is a big step, and it is perfectly fine to try out the field first. Arrange a shadowing visit at a clinic for one or two days, or ask if you can come in for a short summer job. You will see real operations: the smells, the pace, demanding situations, and the joy when an animal recovers, and making a decision will be much easier than relying solely on a job description.
Why entering this field is worthwhile
A veterinary assistant role is not a dead end; it is an entry point into the entire field that can be further developed according to your interests. With experience, opportunities open up for specialisation (anaesthesiology, laboratory diagnostics, surgical assistance), leading a team at a larger clinic, or alternatively moving to another part of the sector, emergency stations, zoos, or the State Veterinary Administration. Demand for qualified assistants has long exceeded supply, so securing stable employment in the region is usually not a problem.
